Poll: Malaysians prefer browsing for gifts on the Net this holiday season

PETALING JAYA: Shoppers in Malaysia have revealed that they will spend an average of RM2,651 on online purchases this holiday season.

A survey conducted by global payments technology firm Visa showed that there was a strong purchasing intention among Malaysian online shoppers during the year-end holiday season.
According to the Holiday Season Online Shopping Study, some 87% of Malaysian respondents said they planned to buy items or services online during this period.

Among the top reasons given for shopping online were price, convenience and product factors.
Visa Malaysia country manager Stuart Tomlinson said shoppers indicated that they were primarily motivated to spend more online by the convenience and substantial cost savings associated with buying on the web.
“Bargain hunters have a much easier time comparing prices online.

“Consumers can take advantage of the numerous sales during the year-end period to stretch their dollar on gifts and stock up for the new year,” he said.

The survey revealed that 59% of respondents from Malaysia said they planned to buy between one and five Christmas presents online.
Around 32% said they would buy between six and 10 gifts online.
 
Travel, fashion and entertainment were also found to top the online holiday shopping list for Malaysians.
The survey was conducted with 4,032 respondents from Malaysia, Australia, mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand on their purchasing attitudes over Christmas and the New Year.
